Message from the Editor
Indian history and culture, encouraging intercultural exchange (including sharing art and music), promoting Indian cuisine, celebrating Indian festivals and traditions are among the several ways to promote and preserve our culture. It is crucial to protect the culture of migrant Indians as culture plays a vital part in an individual’s identity, and losing it can lead to a sense of disorientation and alienation. One should learn to adapt to the culture of the new country, but not at the cost of losing one’s own culture. Striking a balance between assimilation and cultural preservation is crucial. Parents must teach their children about their culture and ensure that they grow up with an appreciation for their roots.
It is also important to address the issues of discrimination and racism. Building a more inclusive society is essential for migrant communities. Around most part of the world, individuals have the right to practice their own culture and religion as long as it does not violate any laws or harm others. In the United Kingdom, this is protected under the Human Rights Act of 1998, which includes provisions for freedom of thought, conscience, and religion, as well as the right to manifest religion or belief in worship, observance, practice, and teaching.
The seeds for this special magazine have emerged from the minds of a group of families living in the UK who hail from the state of Kerala in India and share similar thoughts to protect, preserve, and spread the righteous values of our culture, art, and language. Here at Sanathana Dharma UK (SDUK).
Here at SWARAM, we believe true essence of the famous Sanskrit quote, ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ which means the entire world is one family.
